It all started when…
Our founder Scott Konovalov, was working at a restaurant and while prepping fresh chives. Scott had noticed the quality was not the best, He was a gardener, chives were easy to grow. After planting small garden plot it had began to produce the finest chives and realized a restaurant uses a lot of produce and he needed to expand to meet the demand.
Up to that point he had been unsuccessful experimenting with hydroponics, Scott was very familiar with how to spoon feed the right concentration of salt based Fertilizer to the plants when they need it. Dirt to Him was an inert material to apply ionic chemical fertilizers too, after a few years of hydroponic failure of a variety of reasons from recurring cost for nutrients to constant crop failure by pests and diseases.
At that point he had read the book “Teaming with Microbes” By Jeff Lowenfels and the realization of the world below our feet. Combined with the market gardener By J.M. Fortier and the One Straw revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka. He then removed the hydroponic set up and began building Soil with compost, organic amendments and cover crop plant roots inside the small greenhouse. Outside first was the removal of trash, heavy piles cable wire, tires, and broken grass all was hidden by the blackberry and alders saplings a gift from the previous home owners. Once cleared and covered with compost and wood mulch pathways, with a healthy cover crop the dirt began to change from dense cracked clay to the soft soil.
Nestled at the base of Mt Zion on the Olympic Peninsula, lies our farm Encapsulated Nature. With a 1/4 acre in raised gardens and chicken coops . We practice regenerative techniques to grow healthy soil for healthier plants free from pesticides and chemicals.
